enROMyou – Enhancing Roma youth work

ERASMUS+
Project no° KA210-YOU-4AD4B8BB

The project aims to establish a transnational network of youth and social workers who collaborate with Roma youth or are active in this field.

At its core is the active involvement of Roma youth themselves. The focus lies on exchanging perspectives, experiences, and good practices in youth work – with the goal of jointly developing approaches that promote participation, equal opportunities, and empowerment.

Kick-off Meeting in Eisenstadt

On 15–16 July 2024, the enROMyou project (Enhancing Roma Youth Work) held its transnational kick-off meeting in Eisenstadt, Austria. Representatives from all four partner organisations in Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Romania came together to set the foundations for collaboration, clarify roles and responsibilities, and agree on the first project activities.

The agenda included partner introductions, a project overview, and the joint development of the methodological framework for the survey with Roma youth. Highlights were the presentation of the host organisation Roma VHS, insights into the local Roma community, and fruitful exchanges with stakeholders and policymakers. The meeting also provided valuable opportunities for networking and cultural exchange in a welcoming atmosphere.

LTTA and Workshop in Bucharest

From 28 February to 1 March 2025, the international LTTA training with workshop took place in Bucharest, Romania, within the framework of enROMyou – Enhancing Roma Youth Work. The host organisation was Asociatia “Pe Bune”, which organised an excellently structured and content-rich event.

The focus was on the presentation of survey results, good practice examples from youth work, interactive workshops, and joint reflection on challenges and possible solutions in working with young Roma. Professionals from all four partner countries described the exchange as extremely enriching.

With 15 participants, the event was well attended. The evaluation showed a very high level of satisfaction: 92% of participants gave the highest rating, with an average score of 4.93 out of 5. Particularly appreciated were the discussions with young people, the professional exchange, and the inspiring atmosphere.

The outcomes of the meeting provide a valuable foundation for the planned handbook and have further strengthened transnational cooperation.

As part of the Erasmus+ project enROMyou, a survey was carried out among 75 Roma and Sinti youth in Austria, Hungary, Italy and Romania. The questionnaire explored key areas such as education and work, social participation, trust in institutions, experiences of discrimination, and life aspirations.

HERE you can access the full survey questionnaire in English, which formed the basis for the analysis presented in our handbook. It is shared as a resource for researchers, educators, and practitioners who may wish to replicate or adapt it for their own work.

enROMyou Multiplier Event in Oberwart

Our second enROMyou multiplier/dissemination event took place in October 2025, at a training school for social educators with 36 participants—social workers, teachers and youth workers. We presented the Handbook for Social and Educational Work with Roma and Sinti Youth and the brochure, both of which were received with great enthusiasm.

In the workshop we tested hands-on methods from the handbook: short role-plays on bias and discrimination, reflection rounds on inclusive communication, and group work to design empowerment strategies for young Roma and Sinti. Participants highlighted the handbook as a practical, inspiring tool for everyday youth work and social-pedagogy training.

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone involved—your energy shows how relevant this project is!

Multilingual Handbooks for Social and Educational Work with Roma and Sinti Youth

enROMyou – Enhancing Roma Youth Work strengthens youth work with Roma and Romnja in Austria, Hungary, Italy and Romania. The project connects research, practice and community perspectives: it analyses the lived realities of young people, consolidates effective approaches against antigypsyism and discrimination, and develops concrete tools for schools, social work and youth work. The focus lies on empowerment, participation in democratic life, and language & culture transmission (including Romanes). The transnational partnership has produced a comprehensive handbook (long version) and a concise short version—including background, case studies, facilitation and teaching modules, checklists, templates, and OER materials for immediate use in workshops, project days and trainings.

The handbooks offer an in-depth analysis of the realities of Roma and Sinti youth in four European countries (Austria, Hungary, Italy and Romania), along with tried-and-tested methods and recommendations for professionals in youth work, social work and education. The goal is to foster intercultural understanding, strengthen inclusion, and equip youth and social workers with tools and best-practice examples for working with disadvantaged groups.

Put enROMyou to work in your practice: understand the analysis – adopt the methods – enable participation.
