Democracy in Action: Empowering Adults to Teach the Next Generation (Democracy4All Ages) en

Project Number: 2024-2-AT01-KA210-ADU-000266621

About the Project

The project aims to strengthen the competencies of teachers and adult educators so they can effectively convey democratic values and civic engagement to young learners. At its core is the development of a comprehensive educational package designed to provide children with a deep understanding of democracy and to foster their active participation from an early age. These materials include a teacherโ€™s manual, a guide for adult educators, as well as engaging teaching resources such as lesson plans, videos and interactive games.

The project pursues the following objectives:

  • Development of versatile and adaptable teaching materials to convey democratic principles.
  • Qualification of educators to effectively integrate democratic values into everyday school life.
  • Promotion of awareness and active participation of children in democratic processes.
  • Long-term strengthening of democratic attitudes and an active civil society.

The project is aligned with the priorities of the Erasmus+ funding programme: it supports adult education (ADU priority) through capacity building for educators, while also promoting common values, civic engagement, and participation (horizontal priority) starting from early education.sychological challenges and to create spaces where young people can actively shape their lives and surroundings.

LTTA: Democracy in Action โ€“ Empowering Adults to Teach the Next Generation

From 12โ€“15 January 2026, an international Learning, Teaching and Training Activity (LTTA) took place in Polanica-Zdrรณj, Poland, within the Erasmus+ project โ€œDemocracy in Action: Empowering Adults to Teach the Next Generation.โ€

The LTTA brought together adult educators, teachers and trainers from Austria, Greece and Poland to explore how democracy can be taught as a lived practice, not only as an abstract value โ€“ particularly in educational work with children aged 5โ€“9.

The training has focused on:

  • practice-oriented approaches to democratic education
  • participatory and dialogical learning environments
  • the role of adults as facilitators of democratic learning processes
  • translating democratic values into everyday educational practice

Key methodological inspirations included Philosophy for Children (P4C) and the pedagogical legacy of Janusz Korczak, emphasising childrenโ€™s rights, participation and shared responsibility.

Through workshops, peer exchange and collective reflection, participants developed concrete tools and methods to support sustainable, inclusive and age-appropriate democratic learning.

The LTTA contributed to strengthening professional capacities and fostering a shared European understanding of democracy as an educational practice.

A2 - Methodology Handbook - Democracy in Action

As part of the Erasmus+ project "Democracy in Action: Empowering Adults to Teach the Next Generation" (Democracy4All Ages), this Methodology Handbook was created - a practice-oriented guide for trainers, teachers, and educational professionals who want to introduce children aged 5-9 to democratic values and civic participation. The handbook provides a theoretical framework, concrete implementation guidelines, and tools for testing and evaluation, developed and piloted together with our project partners from Austria, Greece, and Poland. It is complemented by the three national reports from the partner countries in the appendix.

The Methodology Handbook has been published in four languages - English, German, Polish and Greek - and is available here as a free download!

A3 - Teachers' Manual

As part of the Erasmus+ project "Democracy in Action: Empowering Adults to Teach the Next Generation" (Democracy4All Ages), we are pleased to publish the Handbook for Educators.

The handbook offers educators practical guidance and materials to foster democratic values, participation, and active civic engagement among young learners from an early age. It draws on approaches such as Janusz Korczak's child-centred pedagogy and Philosophy for Children (P4C), and covers topics including rights and responsibilities, co-determination, community and belonging, and dealing with diversity in the classroom.

The handbook is available in four languages - English, German, Polish and Greek - as a free download.
